Advanced Poker Lesson: The Gap Concept

Advanced Poker Lesson: The Gap Concept
The gap concept is a term coined by poker author David Sklanksy, out of all the advanced online poker tips, mastering this will give you the biggest increase in your profit from online poker. Essentially the gap concept states that you need a better hand to call a bet than you do to raise (or re-raise). Here's a basic example to show you the gap concept in action. You in a midway through a poker tournament, you've got an average chip stack. The player under the gun (first person to act) makes a raise 3x the big blind. You look down at your hand and you have Ace Ten off suit. The gap concept states that you have to have a better hand to call than you do to raise, which means - as Ace Ten is not an amazing hand, that your only options are to raise or fold. This is where you must make the decision of whether to raise or not, let's look at the possible situations that arise from your decision.
1. You raise and after thinking for a while he lays his hand down, you gain the blinds and the 3x blind bet that your opponent made.
2. You raise and he calls, you now have to see the flop and decide whether to make a continuation bet or not (entirely situational).
3. You raise and he re-raises, you've found out a lot about his hand. If he's willing to re-raise you can lay your hand down and not lose any more chips, note that if you just called here you would have no idea where you stood on the flop - and you could've lost a lot more chips than you did.
These are the outcomes for the correct gap concept method, although in situation 3 you lose your chips, you've limited how much you lose in the hand by finding out what your opponents hand strength is early.
4. You call, once the flop comes down you have absolutely no idea where you stand. You might get 'lucky' and hit a monster, but most likely you won't. Even if you hit your Ace you don't know if he has a better kicker, you are in no-mans land.
This is the outcome for the incorrect use of the gap concept. Your hand isn't strong enough to just call, you haven't given yourself the chance to win the pot there and then, and you are entering the flop betting stage with no information about your opponent's hand.
5. You fold, you've made the decision that your hand isn't good enough to risk your chips in this situation.
This outcome, although not really part of the gap concept, is still a correct decision. If you don't believe that the risk-reward ratio is there for you to raise, you're better off folding than calling.
The gap concept is an essential online poker tip to learn in order to make profits from online poker. Is Online Poker Rigged? The Definitive Answer

Is Online Poker Rigged? The Definitive Answer
The question, 'is online poker rigged?' all too often crops up on poker forums, blogs and discussions, especially when so many people experience almost unbelievable bad beats and suck outs. Obviously, there has to be an explanation to the record number of bad beats one will witness in online poker.
There certainly is an explanation for it, although some may say well, that's poker, or there are too many donkeys or they played bad, the truth of the matter is that it has nothing to do with the other players! The real secret behind the large number of bad beats and suck outs in online poker lies within the online poker software used to generate the cards.
In reality, the answer to 'is online poker rigged' is without a doubt, YES! However, it is not rigged in the manner you may think. It is rigged in the sense that fair play, statistical odds, and a true-to-life outcome is realistically stripped away from the program due to the algorithms used by the poker sites.
These algorithms will determine the outcome of winning hands and force certain players to win while other players lose even though they had the best hand preflop or on the turn. The algorithms and subroutines used by all major poker sites create the problems of overwhelming bad beats and suckouts in an attempt to make the game appear realistic, to induce action, and to give the impression the game is fair to all.
Of course, this may all sound confusing, however, it is the way the poker sites are rigged to produce winning hands and it is an indisputable fact. The secret to winning at an online poker site is knowing the algorithm and then using that to your advantage to give yourself an edge in the game.
The bottom line is simply that internet poker sites are a computer generated program. Moreover, that program can be manipulated by anyone who knows the code of the subroutines and algorithms. There is no live interaction in the shuffle, deal, or outcome of the cards, and therefore the question is online poker rigged, invariably has to be answered YES!

The Internet is awash with information of all sorts, and there will be plenty of tutorials (including video tutorials, if you hate the very idea of reading) from which you can get to learn the workings of online poker.

There are a number of things that would form good criteria for this selection. Here, we are looking at things like fees charged for playing (if any), how winnings are relayed to winners (if it is actual 'monetized' poker that is played there), how friendly the poker playing platform is, how the system on the different poker playing rooms works and so on.

Free Poker Online Guide To How To Use Bullet Bluff Bets

Free Poker Online Guide To How To Use Bullet Bluff Bets
What we mean by 'bullet' in this context is not an Ace (as pocket Aces are commonly called 'bullets'). By 'bullet' here we mean a bet, which is usually a bluff made in your on of offline cash or free poker online game
- By 'first bullet' we mean continuation bet.
- By 'second bullet' we mean a bet on the Turn like continuation bet.
- And by 'third bullet' we mean a bluff at the river.
Why do we continue to fire bullets even if we don't have the best hand?
That's precisely the reason. We bluff at the pot because we have nothing.
Suppose you have A-8 in a Flop of K-K-5 (no Flushes possible), we fire a continuation bet at the Flop and hope that our opponent believes we have the King and they fold. If they raise, well, it's the end of the hand for us.
But the Flop above is a difficult board to raise with nothing. You can assume that a raiser will have a King, and usually many players who do not have it fold after someone else bets. That first bettor should be you, not anyone else.
If someone calls on the Flop above, it's the end of the hand for us, too. If they have the Five, they have the best hand, and even if we pair one of our hole cards, there is still the lingering possibility that the caller has a King and is slow-playing it, so we slow down. The first bullet is enough.
Now, here is a situation where we can fire a second bullet.
Suppose we have 7-6 and the Flop comes 8-5-K. You are first to act so you bet. Here, you still do not have a hand, but if your opponents fold, the pot is yours.
However, if there is a caller, and the Turn does not complete your Straight, (say 8-5-K-J) you can still fire a second bullet.
Your opponent may have a King, but he may also have a mere Eight, and when the second overcard popped out, he may be feeling a bit uncertain already.
Maybe he thinks you are betting because you have a King (which you don't have) and you continued betting to show that amid the Jack, you feel undaunted.
If you can make your opponent fold then good. However, we want to hit our Straight. If we hit our Straight, and fire a third bullet, our opponent has no clue that the last card helped us immensely!
He may interpret it as a bluff again and call. If he folds, then it's just what we expect if he was hanging on with a weak hand. But he may have also called because he had the King all along and is now beat.
However, suppose we do not hit the Straight. We fired two bullets. Do you fire a third?
Say the river came 8-5-K-J-7. The third card made possible a potential Straight. That is one of the reasons to bluff. Make it larger - make it look authentic.
Finally, suppose the Board did not help us fully, like in a Board of J-3-7-9-2 and we have A-10.
We fired two bullets (with the pure intention of making the opponents fold) already. Shall we fire a third?
If we had A-7 in this example, we can just check-check and hope that out pair of Sevens are good in a small-pot showdown. However, if we have A-10, we should bet again.
That is the only way to win the pot. That is one of the best ways to maintain an aggressive game throughout. And, that is one of the best ways to spare us the embarrassment of checking Ace high and forcing to reveal it first.
So, hope this was useful and that it helps you get that extra edge in your next game be it a free online poker tournament or live big money event.

History of Video Poker

History of Video Poker
The First Years
Believe it or not, this game is actually older than slot machines. In 1891, Brooklyn, New York, Sittman and Pitt designed a machine which had card symbols printed on 5 reels. By pulling a lever, one obtained a poker hand of five cards which were used to determine your winnings. This machine was probably a source of inspiration for modern slot machines.
During the 20th Century
In the 70s, the original game was introduced by Poker-Matic of Dale Electronic in 1970. Although at first the players were wary of these machines because they did not trust electronic devices, they increasingly became popular. In the 80s, you could find video poker machines in virtually every casino, with variations of joker such as Joker Poker and Deuces Wild to attract more players. These machines allowed players to enjoy poker without having to compete with other players, became really popular and a very good source of income for casinos.
The current game
In 1994, MicroGaming began to introduce video poker games online as well as a variety of other online casino games. It turned out that game were really suited online, because these games are played exactly the same way live or online. Nowadays, online video poker machines offer a variety of ways of playing, including progressive machines with jackpots amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, this did not mean the end of live machines; there is a couple at your local casino amid the slot machines and table games. With the recent boom of poker, casinos are seeking to attract more eager players to their video poker machines which generate more income than traditional poker games.
If you know how to play poker, you can play video poker. Even if you do not play traditional poker a quick glance at the strength of the hands is all you need to get started. When you're ready to try, you can play at almost any online casino and experience the excitement of playing.

Advantages Of Web-Based Games Over Downloadable Casino Software

Advantages Of Web-Based Games Over Downloadable Casino Software
Playing casino games online is now a choice that many gamblers are taking. Some do it because it is much more convenient, while some just like it over playing in a traditional casino. No matter what your reason is, if you are going to play on online casinos, you would encounter two choices. There are some casinos which offer web-based games while some other offer download-based ones.
Simply put, web-based games are those you can play on your favorite web browser. Download-based, as the name implies means you have to first download then install the program before you can start playing. While your choice here would not make or break your online playing career, it is an important choice nonetheless especially if you are down to two choices with different means of playing the game.
One of the biggest advantages of web-based games is that you can play as soon as you buy your credits. You just have to fire up your browser, check if the plug-ins needed to run the game are up to date, and you are ready to roll. You do not have to download anything into your computer nor do you have to go through the sometimes lengthy process of installing the software.
This is a very good option for people who have computers with limited hard disk space. Installing software especially large ones which can handle a lot of games could eat up a ton of space on your hard drive.
Another real advantage of playing web-based casino games is that you can play it on any computer as long as it meets the minimum system requirements and is connected to the internet. For example, if you have a desktop computer, a notebook, and a tablet, you can play on any of them instantly. You do not have to download and install the client software on each of those machines which could waste plenty of time.
As far as security is concerned, since you are not installing anything into your machine, the risk of contracting malware is very low or even nonexistent. These games are also run using a secure and encrypted connection which means that it would be impossible for other people to "eavesdrop" on the transfer of information between your browser and the server.
Web-based casinos are therefore perfect for anyone who wants to play as soon as possible and on any internet-connected machine. Is it the best choice? That would be for you to decide depending on your needs and wants regarding playing on online casinos.

Dangers of Multi-Table Poker

Dangers of Multi-Table Poker
One of the biggest selling points of online poker is that you can play a ton of hands in an hour, especially if you are using a multi-table strategy. Multi-table poker is simply where you sit down at more than one table at a time in an effort to increase your earnings per hour. This can be quite useful after you have a good amount of notes on your opponents, or if you plan on utilizing a very tight starting hand strategy, but if you haven't taken plenty of notes on your possible competition or if you plan on playing more hands, multi-table poker can be a very dangerous game for you to be playing.
Online poker rooms encourage players to play multiple tables at once because it increases their earnings per hour through their rake system. Players are then awarded points per number of hands played and get to trade them in for prizes or use them as tournament entry fees. The downside here is that your focus is diverted in different directions. Let's say for instance you pick up pocket nines at one table then at the same time you pick up Ace Queen offsuit from late position. Both hands are playable hands and are exactly what you've been waiting for. Now the problem is, how are you supposed to pay attention to exactly who you're playing against, put them on a range of possible hands, and bet properly to ensure maximum chip earnings while decreasing your exposure to possible losses when your focus is split?
Some players become experts at doing this. Others just let their time window click away until they decide what to do at the other table. Of course, your decision making process will not be as sharp if you are trying to pay attention to opponents at two or more tables at one time. Your guess of range can be off, putting your pocket nines up against an opponent slowplaying pocket jacks, or your Ace Queen could be dominated by an opponent playing Ace King that you would have picked up on had you been paying attention to their betting patterns.
The biggest issue with multi-table poker is tilt. Let's say, for instance, you take a very bad beat at one table yet are doing quite well at the other. Suddenly your mind is clouded because you can't believe that donkey just called you with 43 offsuit and you begin dumping chips at the other table out of rage. Your winning session at one table has now turned into an overall losing session simply because of what happened during one hand at one table.
It's best to stick to one table at a time when you are first collecting notes on opponents that way when you do start multi-tabling you'll have a much better idea of what your opponents are up to. You'll also be able to take advantage of some of the mistakes multi-table players make. For instance, a player who is sitting at three tables may accidentally fold or call against a bet of yours simply because they meant to click that button on another table. Or you may be able to adjust your strategy slightly to sucker them into betting against you when you're holding a very strong hand.
You can spot a table full of multi-table players simply by looking at how many hands per hour are being played at that particular table. Tables where less hands are being played per hour have more multi-tablers than tables with a lot of hands per hour.
Do not multi-table if you are playing in different buy in level Sit N Go tournaments either. You'll lose track of what level buy-in you came in at, and you'll have more difficulty adjusting your game strategy based on your chip stack. You may be the chip leader at one table and be able to bully but if you try the same strategies as the short stack at your other table, you'll be out of the tournament in no time.

Aggression and Poker

Aggression and Poker
I think this concept as it relates to overall play is massively understood. Is "aggression" profitable? Does it pay to be aggressive? Is aggression "good"?
A lot of players would quickly say yes. But I , sort of. I think there is a much bigger picture. There is good aggression and bad aggression. Aggression just for the sake of aggression, while probably profitable in spurts, I don't think can be +EV in the long run. Actually these types of players, players who are just aggressive for the sake of it (let's call them "Aggressive-BAD") are easy to beat in my opinion.
I think most players would agree that passive poker is the least profitable playing style possible. If you're always soft playing your hands, then you're obviously not maximizing your overall value. And if it is always your desire to get to showdown in hopes that you have the best hand, then you are missing one huge weapon in your betting arsenal: bluffing. So passives are also limited in how they can win. Put simply: passive=bad. When you're always calling and calling and you only raise when you have the nuts, you will never be profitable in the long run. It's impossible. You're also very easy to beat; any decent player is just going to value bet you to death and simply fold to your raises.
Have you ever sat at a mostly tight-passive table and watched a GOOD, aggressive player absolutely steamroll everybody? It is always one of my favorite events to observe. You watch these passive players consistently limp in or make chintzy raises and just continually get re-jacked or outplayed if they are brazen enough to call pre-flop. Then they mumble to themselves when they feel compelled to muck. Then, all of a sudden, an interesting dynamic shift happens; the gang of passives, without even muttering a single word to each other, decide to "gang up" on the aggro player! They secretly hope and pray that if they can't do it, then one of their passive-bad cohorts will take a huge pot off the good, aggressive player. Only problem is, their traps don't work, their bluffs don't work; nothing works! And this player continues to play aggressively, bluffing in spots where he could show up with monster hands, and also value bets in spots where he could show up with air. He balances his ranges well and poses a lot of problems both pre and post-flop.
This player fits under the description of "Aggressive-GOOD." He gives you headaches at the table. He makes you want to quit cards forever. He's the guy you think is just blessed, just running good. He's the guy you so desperately want to trap, damn it! But you don't, and you won't.
Plain and simple: Aggression + purpose=Good. Very good.
But what about those players that learned aggression in and of itself is good, but don't apply the concept well at all? These players are still in every pot, just like the "passive-bad" players we discussed earlier. But they bet and raise in spots that are inconsistent with any kind of strong hand. They are aggressive just for the sake of being aggressive. Their betting lines usually don't make any sense, so savvy players adjust quickly by calling, raising, and even re-raising light. They are also easy to trap, because they overplay hands and bet and raise in spots where it's quite obvious they can never be winning. Spend enough time with this player and he or she will exhibit the same kind of betting pattern over and over and over again. For example, I was playing heads-up limit with an "Aggressive-BAD" the other day. After about 10 hands, I noticed that this player always always always checked the flop and then bet the turn without fail. What an easy adjustment to make to know that all I had to do was widen my check-raise range on the turn against this player. Even lowest pair made me confident enough to double his big bet on Fourth Street.
So what player profile do you think you fit under? Passive-bad, Aggressive-bad, or Aggressive-good? What works (and doesn't work) for you? Can you think of some ways you can begin to combat all three playing styles? Hopefully this entry will shed a little light on the "Aggression" theory as it relates to poker as well as make you think a little more about your own aggression level at the table.

Are Men Better Free Poker Game Players Than Women?

Are Men Better Free Poker Game Players Than Women?
Have you ever noticed how male and female poker players tend to have different playing styles even in free poker games?
This may not be something that a lot of players are able to pick up on. However, I have noticed it a great deal from playing at different tables both free poker games and high stakes, online and casino. My observation is that female poker players tend to be a little more careful than male players. Women tend to play hands less frequently, and just take down small pots in order to keep above water. In comparison men are often more aggressive, take more risks and chase larger pots.
Although it may be a biased opinion, I feel strongly towards my claim and have no doubts about what I've learned, as I say, these are observations taken from many free poker tournaments online and paid Internet and casino tables.
Another observation is that it can be easier to push a woman off of a pot than a male player. Women tend to avoid the larger pots as I've mentioned already. That's why it is often easier to buy a pot off of a female player than against a male.
Now before anyone gets angry I'm not taking anything away from the female game with that point, I just feel that women tend to play more of a conservative game which can also be an advantage to them.
This is because men tend to jump the gun a little bit. They'll try to force hands that aren't meant to be. Not to say that only they do it, but once again, it's just something I've noticed from playing myself. It seems to be especially prevalent in free poker games and tournaments where despite the lack of risk the women play a more sensible game with a more strategic objective as opposed to an all-in and hope mentality.
Of course everyone has their flaws and strong points and it's not just down to gender! You'll find super cautious male players and very aggressive women.
As intelligent "cut above the average" players of either sex we must always strive to learn from our mistakes, practice at free poker games to improve and accept that we may have certain gender related traits that we should aim to harness to our advantage.

Free Poker Guide - Poker Tournament and Online Play With Big Pairs

Free Poker Guide - Poker Tournament and Online Play With Big Pairs
In this free poker article we discuss how to play with big pairs like AA, KK, QQ and JJ
With the best hand, AA it is very important to look for big raise or re-raise if someone raises before you. It is a mistake in strategy with AA to just call a raise because you are missing the opportunity to get more money into the pot with the best hand and more important thing is that you are giving players with weaker hands the opportunity to improve their hands on the flop.
If you can compel your opponents to either fold or believe you're faking it with 1 or 2 big cards and then call your large raise. With double Aces you must ensure the speed of play is at a reasonable tempo by not allowing little raises. Because if you do the other players will gain the chance to improve on the flop and also the number of opponents will drop.
After the flop you should do big raise not giving anyone chance to call for any straights, flushes or drawing hands for small amount of chips. However, there is always possibility that one of your opponents has made a better flop and so you should be aware of the fact that you may no longer hold the best hand. But in spite of this, you will normally still be ahead and so you should continue to build the pot unless you are quite sure that you are no longer ahead.
When playing hands like KK, QQ and JJ you should raise before the flop. Someone would have maybe A and something lower but it is very rare to come up against a better hand before the flop when holding either of these hands, so raising will reduce the number of players who want to see a flop. Key thing is to limit the number of players who you are up against with either of these hands because the opponents can easily make a better hand than you hitting an Ace on flop to make bigger pair.
There are 2 scenarios which the "flop" creates- you will either turn overcards or you won't. When there's no overcards on the flop you should carry on raising. The 2nd scenario when overcards are on the table is a lot harder to play. I recommend to raise a three or four times a large blind and then consider your options after the opposing player responds to the raise. If they call be careful and bide your time as you don't have the highest chance of taking the money in any more scenarios. If the pot keeps getting larger you must be ready to let the hand go.
Always consider the possibility that your opponent could have a better hand than you if they are also playing aggressively by betting and raising too. Playing with big pairs can be sometimes tricky but if you do right raises before flops, and after it is more likely for you to win pot.
I look forward to seeing you at the free poker tables soon!

Emigrant Poker Pros

Emigrant Poker Pros
15th April, also known as Black Friday changed the lives of many - this was the day when the FBI seized the domains of the biggest online poker rooms and one of the consequences is that Full Tilt Poker still remains closed. Perhaps those professional poker players were the most affected who made their living playing poker online. One day, they noticed that they can not log in to the sites, where they made their daily bread. Many of them felt that their country betrayed them and made them unemployed for no reason, so they had to leave the country to continue their chosen profession, or they had to choose another path.
Many top players in the world were affected and it was relatively easy for many of them to find another place to call their home base. Those who moved or set up a residency abroad and continued to play included the word's perhaps most popular player Daniel Negreanu, high-stakes regular Phil Galfond, EPT-winner Kevin MacPhee, Gavin Hastings, Olivier "livb" Busquet, one of the best $5-$10 to $25-$50 no-limit hold'em cash games grinders around Andrew Brokos and one of the most creative online players Cole South. The most popular destination is Canada because of its closeness and the language.
In late July, WSOP champion Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond began his new life in Vancouver, Canada. He plays mainly high-stakes tables on PokerStars. Shortly after his relocation he tweeted he played happily and still loves the game.
Andrew "Foucault" Brokos also went to Canada where he strengthens team PokerStars Online. Brokos has been living nomadically in the U.S. for the 18 months prior to Black Friday, just travelling around the country playing online poker, so packing up and leaving the country was not too disruptive for him. Currently, he lives in the Canadian Rockies with his girlfriend.
Others, however, found it more difficult to find a place that they could call home and from which they could play poker. One of them is Dan "Jungelman12" Cates, who still has not found a new homeland. He was unable to enter Canada because he did not have a valid visa - to play poker as a living you need a working visa. The same in Europe so he has not yet found a European country that will accept him. Previously, he was considering Portugal, currently he lives in London, but he is still not certain that England will be the final destination. He applied for the Canadian visa in the meantime. Cates, who won $ 7.5 million between 2010 and 2011, wanted to relocate from Seattle to Vancouver.
Many others are also looking for a place from which they can play at the virtual green felt on a daily basis. The 26 years old WSOP bracelet winner Joe Ebanks from Ohio with total career earnings of almost $5,000,000 wants to continue his online poker career and will probably move to Canada, England or somewhere else in Europe where online poker is legal.
These players are not fleeing some kind of a despot country in order to protect their living, they are simply trying to get out of a country where at present they can no longer make their livelihood. Taking advantage of the situation, PocketFives Poker Forum created the Poker Refugees service. PocketFives founder, Cal Spears explained that he noticed that relocation and its challenges had become a hot topic on the forum. The cost of the Poker Refugees service is $1,000 per person. They will help with a range of services, including finding a place to live, making travel plans, visa acquisition, getting a local bank account and more.

Once you've reviewed this section, and others perhaps, you will need to be sure that there is money in your account. There are usually a myriad of ways to fund your account made available to you, however the majority of people prefer to use one of their credit cards to enable payment. Amounts will vary depending on the site you've chosen, but many people choose the minimum to begin especially if they are not yet adept at playing poker.
Most good sites also allow you to practice for free, so that if you have not yet created a winning strategy, you can do so without actually winning or losing money. Some downloads involve minimum amounts of money to be deposited, as well as maximum amounts. Some limit how often you may make a deposit, and there are a very small minority of sites who will charge you a processing fee for handling your deposited amount, but that is extremely rare.
